The advent of Ethernet technology in slip rings was in the mid 80s and during those times a twisted pair wire was used for transmission. With evolution in technology, the data speed and bandwidth increased. Therefore, the right configuration became necessary for enhanced functions of a slip ring. Whilst passive slip rings can operate and comply with the monumental Ethernet specifications, but superior performance can only be ensured with right configuration and following all details and instructions.
Considerations:
Here are some factors you need to keep in mind when you use a slip ring. The protocol being used: There are two kinds of protocols used in internet connections and Ethernet Slip ring operation. These include Transmission Control Protocol and User Datagram Protocol.
While Transmission Control Protocol ensures an error free transfer of data, the User Datagram Protocol doesn't provide you with error correction but only optimizes transfer speed in industrial control setups.
Materials:
UDP mainly uses gold plated rings and fiber conductive brushes. While small capsular designs provide for error free transmission, that too for prolonged time intervals, the use of these materials also depends on considerations like rotational speed, environment, and required shelf life.
But production environments require more precision where even a minor error or loss of data packets can cause complete system shut down. Gold Plated rings and fiber brushes offer you that error free transmission and coupled with that you have enhanced shelf life and better compliance to extreme temperature and environmental conditions.
Data Speed:
Most conventional Ethernet cables have 8 twisted wires, four of which are used for data operations at 10 or 100_T.
But in case of transmission of 1000_T, all the 8 wires are required.
All of this depends on the data and speed specifications.
Shielding:
Shielded cables may or may not be required in varied industries. But what shielding does is safeguard the wires against corruption due to Electromagnetic Interference. So areas where the electromagnetic interference is high, shielded cables are usually preferred. However, shielded wires can increase production costs significantly and in most cases where the rest of the system is shielded, it is recommended to maintain the shield through the slip ring itself.
Running Power through Slip ring:
Laying of circuits inside a slip ring leads to isolation of power and Ethernet from each other. In this case no more protection is required. Ethernet Cables running together outside the slip ring are protection enough. But many companies provide for a standard isolation system inside these slip rings and outside too, whether it's aimed at noise prevention or interference.
But to be fair, most ethernet cables are capable of handling both power and signal as per their current and voltage specifications.
The only condition where sealing may be required is in case of a noisy power supply.
Ethernet Cables have changed the course of data and power transmission and helped many companies prosper and augment their fortunes. Most companies have options for various data requirements. You need to ascertain your production criteria before making a choice.
